DAY TWO - SINGLES

TEAM SFG 6 - PRO CHALLENGE TEAM 4

The Singles matches were eagerly anticipated and did not disappoint.

Match One - Gordon Brand Jnr halved with Olly Smith

Olly Smith gains a valuble half point in the SFG final 

Brand Junior and Olly Smith were the first pairing out and the match went the distance after an enthralling match with both players refusing to back down. A half on the last green seemed like a fair outcome.

A talented Olly Smith, who amassed 2 ½ points from his 3 matches and surely one we will hear about in the future said, "This has been a fantastic experience, I really want to come next year".

Match Two - John Hawksworth won 1up against Simon Kelly

John Hawksworth defeats Kidderminsters Simon Kelly 

John Hawksworth's match with Simon Kelly also went the distance but Kelly unfortunately found the dreaded ‘aqua' on the final hole presenting Hawksworth with a victory by 1 hole. A deflated Kelly, a likable character from the Midlands, said "It was such a close match but unfortunately nerves got the better of me and I found the water on the last. I'm 48 years old and this is by far the best thing I have ever been involved in, it's been a ‘money-can't-buy' occasion"

John Hawksworth added, "What a fantastic concept, I'm sure SFG will go from strength to strength".

Match Three - Philip Walton lost 5&4 to Mark Fosker

There was a comfortable win for young Mark Fosker who defated Philip Walton and never stopped smiling throughout.

Match Four - Joanne Morley lost 7&6 to Mike Hearne  

Joanne Morley misses putt in SFG Final against Mike Hearne 

Mike Hearne defeated Morley by 7 and 6. Morley insisted that "I had no chance, he (Hearne) was 5 under gross when the game ended!".

Watched by his club secretary his ball striking was sensational and his power proved too much for Joanne on a long course with little carry.

And Alison Nicholas, a former Women's US Open winner and who was captain of the Pro Team and who carried Joannes bag exclaimed, "It's a wonderful idea and I was really pleased that I could get involved, Ideally though I would like to see some lady golfers participating next year so come on girls!"

Match Five - Roger Chapman lost 6&4 to Tim Sholem

Tim Sholem lines up another putt in his win against Roger Chapman 

Tim Sholem, a determined individual, proved too strong for Chapman, running away with a comfortable 6 and 4 victory. "I was delighted with my whole game today, my short game was great, I can't wait to tell all my mates about beating Roger Chapman!".

Sholem who won Q-School capped a memorable couple of days winning a full 3 points for Team SFG.

Tim Sholem claimed, "I shall never forget the experience I have had this week, it's been incredible".

Match Six - John McHenry halved with Brad Rowntree

Yet another exciting match went the distance with a halved match between Irishman McHenry and Brad Rowntree.

"It's been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, I've learnt so much from playing with the professionals, and playing on the Ryder Cup course has been a privilege" said Bradley Rowntree.

Match Seven - Steve Richardson won 2&1 against Josh Kenny

Steve Richardson edged out Josh Kenny on the 17th playing some superb golf to ensure his first point of the campaign.

"I've had a great time and I was delighted to see how talented some of these amateurs are, the future of our game is in good shape", said Ryder Cup star Steven Richardson.

Match Eight - Gordon Brand Snr lost 3&2 to Stuart Watts

Stuart Watts holds his nerve to defeat Gordon Brand Senior 

Stuart Watts defeated Brand Snr with another nerveless display from the 8 handicapper.

Match Nine - Paul Way lost 2up to Justin O’Connell

Paul Way narrowly defeated on the 18th by Justin O'Connell 

Justin O'Connell won 2 up on the 18th against Paul Way who had played some superb golf all day but O'Connell seemed to find the crucial strokes on holes where he had shots.

Match Ten - Jeremy Robinson won 5&4 against Will Bowe  

Will Bowe struggles to keep pace with Walker Cup player Jeremy Robinson 

Jeremy Robinson, fresh from his superb showing in the PGA cup proved too strong for Will Bowe who admitted himself to having played below par.

Team SFG, who were superbly lead by Captain McEvoy, were just too strong for their professional counterparts over a very long course.

The final result being Team SFG 12 ½ - 7 ½

The presentation was made on the 18th green and after a full group photo the beautiful trophy was presented to a beaming Peter McEvoy and his victorious team of Single Figure Golfers.
