I kind of hope it is, because the alternative — that it's true — turns my stomach. TMZ is reporting that Rachel Uchitel — you know, the Tiger Woods mistress whose unmasking the day before Thanksgiving set this whole mess in motion — has received $10 million to remain quiet. Yes, a one followed by seven zeroes. Now, according to the report, the settlement was made just before Uchitel and her lawyer Gloria Allred were about to have your basic nuclear, scorched-earth press conference. Couple points to consider: 1.First, this has to be the worst-invested seven-figure sum since Bernie Madoff (or, if you prefer, the Washington Redskins). I mean, unless Uchitel has the inside scoop on Woods' proclivity for cannibalism (speculation!), what else could come out at this point? 2.Second, consider the source. While TMZ has usually been right in terms of facts, they've often been way off the mark in terms of degree. In other words, the settlement could very easily have been 10 bucks, and a few zeroes got added in for effect. 3.Third, remember the date. Though this would be an ugly little joke, it still could be a joke. (As Shane pointed out Wednesday night on Twitter, though, wouldn't it be great if Tiger, Elin et. al. held a press conference today to say, "April Fool!") Still, if this is true, I think we all missed an opportunity to make a quick buck, yes? |
